Community Support

HOST's mission is to provide affordable home ownership opportunities to build strong, vibrant communities. We believe that home ownership provides family stability, a way to build equity and security for the future, and stabilizes neighborhoods. We focus on building attractive, quality homes priced to be affordable to families earning between 70% and 100% of Median Family Income (click here for information on the Median Family Income for the Portland metropolitan area).

This becomes more challenging each year, as the cost of land increases more rapidly than the median income. In Portland, a family earning 70% of Median Family Income can afford a home priced at $159,250. In October 2004 the average home price in Portland was $212,000. The difference between those two numbers is where HOST comes in.

Our marketing efforts focus on reaching people who may not otherwise consider home ownership: working individuals and families, single parents, people of color, or people with no history of home ownership in their families. We also provide up to $5,000 closing cost assistance to qualified homebuyers.

HOST provides the following resources to homebuyers:

	Affordably priced, brand new, energy-efficient homes.
	Up to $5,000 closing cost assistance to qualified buyers.
	Access to our network of preferred lenders, who are experienced with first time homebuyer loans and clients with credit issues.
	Outreach and education. HOST holds frequent homebuyer orientations in the community to introduce residents of those communities to homeownership.

We are able to continue and expand these activities with the support of our partners in the community. Donations help us keep our home prices low, help with the closing costs for a qualified family, and help us maintain our outreach and education activities in the community.
